The HLT Hilo’Tron style Single-Coil Guitar pickup has the same structure as the original Gretsch pickup.

You’re right. The Alnico#5 magnet is mounted to the side of the coil. And the pole screws are gaussed through an L-shaped piece of iron connecting the screws to the magnet, and the other pole of the magnet has a steel blade attached as well.
